HELAS (European HELio- and AsteroSeismology network) is a network funded by the European Commission as part of the Sixth Framework Programme from 2006-2010. The activities of HELAS will structure this European Research Area by bringing together the European groups active in helio- and asteroseismology.
HELAS has six network activities:
NA1: Managment
NA2: Forum
NA3: Global Helioseismology
NA4: Local Helioseismology
NA5: Asteroseismology (this website)
NA6: Public Outreach
The goals of the NA5 activity were defined as follows:
- to promote a vital exchange between groups active in the field of stellarphysics
- to strengthen Europe's competence in asteroseismology
- to coordinate the development of software package tools for frequency analysis, mode identification and model comparison and offer these tools to the community
- to integrate tools and results from global helioseismology
- to provide an efficient coordination between the numerous European initiatives in asteroseismology
- to achieve an effective integration of all European expertise through workshops and exchanges
- to help organise worldwide multisite multitechnique campaigns with existing and future facilities
- to help European scientists with the interpretation of the huge databases of seismic data of stars delivered by ongoing and future space missions, such as CoRoT, Kepler, PLATO and GAIA
The NA5 activities within HELAS were defined following the plans and routes set out by the informal asteroseismology network ENEAS.
The host institute for the HELAS NA5 web-site is the Institute of Astronomy of the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium.
