The year 2009 has been declared the International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009) by the UNESCO upon proposal by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). The occasion is the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilei. To participate in the global activities of the IYA2009, the institute for astronomy of the K.U. Leuven organises a series of public lectures on astronomy related topics, called "Ontdek jezelf. Begin bij het heelal." ("Discover yourself. Start with the Universe."). The lectures are aimed at the general public, thus they will be leveled to general understanding, and will take place in an auditorium in the centre of Leuven. This web page sumarises the information for this lecture series.

The list of speakers for "Ontdek jezelf. Begin bij het heelal." includes well-known scientists from the Dutch-speaking community, with experts from the Institute for Astronomy in Leuven, but also for instance the current Director General of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), Tim de Zeeuw. A number of other distinguished astrophysicists will give talks as well.

The target group of the lecture series "Ontdek jezelf. Begin bij het heelal." is the general public, in particular employees and alumni of the K.U. Leuven (Science Faculty), students, amateur astronomers, science school teachers, and interested laymen. Since the level of the talks will be introductory, the lectures will be suited for everybody. Nevertheless, the speakers will give a comprehensible insight into the current developments and discoveries in their respective field of research. All talks will be in Dutch. Inscription or reservation is not required, and the entrance is for free.
